Anyone may obtain a free copy of their credit report, once every 12 months, from each of the three major credit-reporting companies: Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. Instructions for doing this are available on the Federal Trade Commission's web site on this topic.

A few states have laws allowing free access to credit reports at any time, not just once annually. At last check these were Colorado, Georgia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Vermont.

When you're denied credit, you can also obtain a free copy of your credit report, even if you've gotten copies within the past 12 months.

In addition to the free copies, credit reporting agencies will provide reports for a fee at any time, as will Fair Isaac Corporation , creator of the FICO Score used in mortgage lending.
